Meet Our Executive Team
President & CEO
An entrepreneur with 30 years of visionary leadership in telecommunications and IT infrastructure, Nancy Phillips is president and CEO of ViaWest, Inc., and president of Shaw Business Infrastructure Services, a division of Shaw Communications (NYSE: SJR), which acquired ViaWest in 2014. Phillips co-founded ViaWest in 1999 and has built it into a successful company more than 550 employees, annual revenues of nearly $300 million and relationships with more than 2,000 clients.
Phillips serves on numerous boards in support of the industry, the Colorado community and the advancement of women, including the National Center for Women and Information Technology; Blackstone Entrepreneurs Network; National Cybersecurity Center; Colorado Technology Association; and Startup Colorado. She has received numerous accolades for her visionary leadership and service including most recently the inaugural Colorado Governor’s Citizenship medal for Growth and Innovation, as well as the Canadian Governor General’s Medallion in recognition of her service and support of the economic ties between Canada and the United States and her distinguished track record building technology businesses. She also has been selected as the 2016 EY Entrepreneur of the Year in Technology Services for the Mountain Desert region and has received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Colorado Technology Association.
As part of the initial ViaWest leadership team since 1999, Michael leads the finance, accounting and procurement departments. His leadership has guided ViaWest through multiple rounds of debt and equity financing and numerous mergers and acquisitions, including investments by Oak Hill Capital Partners in 2010 and the merger with Shaw Communications, Inc. in 2014.
Prior to joining ViaWest, Michael was an audit manager with Arthur Anderson, LLP. Currently, he serves on the advisory board for Advocate for Children (a CASA organization) and is a past board chairman.
Michael received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Colorado State University and is certified as a public accountant (inactive) in the State of Colorado.
Jason joined ViaWest in 2011 as vice president product development before being promoted to the newly created role of Chief Technology Officer. As CTO, Jason is responsible for the strategic direction of all ViaWest IT solutions, products and technology initiatives.
Prior to ViaWest, Jason had nearly 20 years of experience in leadership positions in both small startup companies and large Fortune 100 enterprises, focused on product architecture, product management and technical sales. His previous roles include over 10 years at Sun Microsystems, where he was a distinguished engineer in network and systems architecture, focused on cloud computing and data center architectures, and director of cloud services engineering at VMware.
Jason was the lead author of one of the first books highlighting the combined use of virtualization and automation. He also has several patents in networking, data center resource management, virtualization, and security.
Jeff leads ViaWest’s marketing initiatives with responsibility for product management, product marketing, demand generation and business development. He brings extensive management experience in the data center and telecommunications industry ranging from startups to global service providers.
Prior to ViaWest, Jeff held leadership positions at Communications Media Advisors, a boutique management consulting and investment firm; Elevation Data Centers; Zayo Colocation; and Level 3 Communications where among other responsibilities he led the European and North American colocation businesses. Before joining Level 3, Jeff was responsible for the dedicated hosting business at HostPro/Interland. Jeff is also an Adjunct Professor in the Information and Communications Technology graduate degree program at the University of Denver.
Jeff received his Bachelor of Arts in History from Dartmouth College and his MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth.
Senior Vice President & General Counsel
Joe joined the ViaWest team in 2010 after assisting in the acquisition of the company by Oak Hill Capital Partners. In addition to overseeing all legal matters for the company, Joe has responsibility for all real estate transactions and provides guidance in connection with corporate development and customer transactions.
Prior to joining ViaWest, Joe spent ten years in private practice assisting clients with corporate transactions, including mergers, acquisitions and joint ventures, private and public securities offerings and compliance matters, and corporate governance.
Joe received his law degree from the University Of Denver Sturm College Of Law, and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Boston University.
Chief Data Center Officer
As Chief Data Center Officer, Dave directs the design and construction of new data centers and data center expansions, as well as defining the standards and practices for operation of ViaWest’s data centers. He is also responsible for strategy and positioning of the data center colocation product lines.
Prior to ViaWest, Dave founded Critical Infrastructure Consulting LLC., and was the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Infocrossing for nine years. He was also the CTO for (i)Structure, a division of Level(3) Communications which Infocrossing later acquired. Prior to that, he was CTO of Corporate Express, Inc. based in Broomfield, Colorado.
Dave also has a long-time affiliation with the Uptime Institute, the leading educational and standards organization in the data center industry. He was an Uptime Institute Fellow throughout the Fellow Program’s life, has contributed to thought leadership and Uptime Institute white papers, and is a judge for their annual Green IT awards in the Data Center Design category. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Texas Christian University.
Vice President of Human Resources
Anne joined the ViaWest team in 2007, leading the human resources and talent management strategies to support growth objectives. Anne brings more than 20 years of experience in human resources and is responsible for building programs and systems to support recruitment, talent management, and acquisition integration to maximize organizational effectiveness and build a world class team.
Prior to joining ViaWest, Anne held senior leadership positions in the healthcare field where she designed human resources systems to create exceptional employee experiences. She also served as a managing director for Hemo-Net, the first SaaS provider supporting mission critical applications for blood centers nationwide. It was in this role that she found her passion for technology and the important role it plays in our society.
Anne earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Colorado, and holds certifications as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) and SHRM Senior Certified Professional.
Senior Vice President of Sales
Jason Nance has an extensive background in the Managed IT Services, Colocation, Cloud and Disaster Recovery industry, with nearly 20 years of sales and leadership experience. He has a strong reputation of demonstrated leadership, resulting in his teams consistently exceeding company objectives, while creating solid executive customer relationships and repeat buyers.
In his previous role as Senior Vice President of Sales at SunGard Availability Services (AS), Jason was responsible for helping to create the SunGard AS sales strategy and the creation of new products and services, both of which were instrumental in SunGard AS’ expansion and growth, as well as the 2014 successful spinoff from SunGard Data Systems to be an independent $1.4B company.
Earlier in his career, Jason worked in the financial services SaaS industry, selling treasury and risk management software to the Fortune 1000. His focus on creating value in operational efficiencies, providing risk mitigation and demonstrating overall shareholder value paved the way for his later move into IT services.
Jason is a graduate from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and lives in Dallas with his wife and 3 children.
Vice President & General Manager of Shaw Data Centre and Cloud Solutions
David joins Shaw Communications with fifteen years of IT experience across sales, marketing and executive roles, spending the past decade in leadership roles in the data center services market. Before joining Shaw, David served as Vice President of Enterprise Sales at Rogers Data Centers where he helped drive the successful sale of Pivot Data Centers to Rogers in October 2013.
A respected leader in the IT community, David has an extensive background in product marketing and new product creation aligned to unique and diverse regional needs. A thorough knowledge of the IT sector and a key driver for Shaw’s hybrid cloud, colocation and managed services offerings, he is an important leader for Shaw in Canada. Based out of Calgary, David received his degree from Lakehead University in Ontario, Canada where he studied communications, marketing, economics and operations strategy.
